Compound monograph — Performance Peak

Performance Peak is a research solution of five nitrogen-containing compounds: acetyl L-carnitine and carnitine at 200 mg each, agmatine and arginine at 50 mg each, and glutamine at 25 mg, listed at 525 mg/ml in total. Each component has its own research literature: glutamine as an inter-organ nitrogen carrier and glutaminase substrate, agmatine as an arginine-derived neuromodulator, arginine as the substrate of nitric oxide synthases, and carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine in mitochondrial acyl transport and rat nerve-injury models. No study of the combination is cited. Lot data are on the certificate of analysis. It is sold strictly for laboratory research use.

Research applications

  • Glutamine: Reviewed as a carrier of nitrogen, carbon and energy between organs and as the substrate of liver-type and kidney-type glutaminase isoforms, which are regulated differently [1]
  • Agmatine: Reviewed as an arginine decarboxylation product stored in synaptic vesicles, with affinity for α2-adrenergic, imidazoline I1 and NMDA receptors and inhibitory effects on nitric oxide synthase, studied mostly in rodent behavioral models [2]
  • Arginine: Reviewed as the substrate that nitric oxide synthases oxidize to NO and L-citrulline, and for the competition between NOS and arginase for L-arginine [3]
  • Acetyl-L-carnitine: A systematic review of rat sciatic nerve injury studies in which acetyl-L-carnitine was given in drinking water or intraperitoneally, covering thermal and mechanical thresholds, latency and apoptosis [4]
  • Carnitine: Reviewed as a carrier of activated fatty acids and activated acetate across the inner mitochondrial membrane, synthesized from lysine-derived trimethyllysine [5]
