Compound monograph — Hair-Skin-Nails

Hair-Skin-Nails is a research blend of nine B-complex vitamins and related compounds, led by niacinamide and thiamine HCl at 50 mg and pantothenic acid at 25 mg, with microgram amounts of biotin, folic acid and riboflavin. Each component is a precursor of an enzyme cofactor: thiamine of thiamin diphosphate, pantothenate of coenzyme A, biotin of carboxylase prosthetic groups, riboflavin of FMN and FAD, folate of one-carbon carriers, and niacinamide and niacin of NAD. The product name is a catalog label and does not describe a research outcome. Lot data are on the certificate of analysis. It is sold strictly for laboratory research use.

Research applications

  • Thiamine: Reviewed for thiamin diphosphate-dependent enzymes, their differences between mammals and microorganisms, and the use of selective substrate and thiamin analogs in cellular and animal models [1]
  • Pantothenic acid: Reviewed for the five-step synthesis of coenzyme A from pantothenate, its regulation by pantothenate kinases, and the four PanK isoforms studied through gene deletion in mice [2]
  • Biotin: Reviewed as the prosthetic group of carboxylases in gluconeogenesis, fatty acid synthesis and amino acid catabolism, and for proposed roles in gene expression [3]
  • Riboflavin: Reviewed for the 90 human genes encoding FMN- or FAD-dependent proteins, most of them oxidoreductases in the TCA cycle, β-oxidation and amino acid degradation [4]
  • Folic acid: Reviewed for folate one-carbon metabolism and its intersection with cobalamin at methionine synthase, which uses 5-methyltetrahydrofolate as the methyl donor [5]
