Compound monograph — Cardiogen

Cardiogen is the synthetic tetrapeptide Ala-Glu-Asp-Arg (AEDR), a cardiovascular-oriented member of the Khavinson short peptide series. Researchers have tested the Cardiogen peptide in organotypic myocardial cultures from young and old rats, in embryonic fibroblasts where it changed cytoskeletal protein levels, and in a transplanted sarcoma model in senescent rats. Its arginine C-terminus distinguishes it from the related AED-based peptides. Research Market supplies Cardiogen as a lyophilized research reagent, with purity and identity data for each lot reported on its certificate of analysis. It is sold strictly for laboratory research use.

Chemical structure and identification

  • Molecular formula: C18H31N7O9
  • Molecular weight: 489.5 g/mol
  • CAS number: 857267-11-9
  • PubChem CID: 11583989
  • Amino acid sequence: Ala-Glu-Asp-Arg (AEDR)
  • Synonyms: H-Ala-Glu-Asp-Arg-OH
  • Form: Lyophilized powder
  • Analytical methods: RP-HPLC for purity and mass spectrometry for identity, reported on the batch certificate of analysis

Research applications

  • Myocardial tissue culture: At 10-12 M in organotypic myocardium explants from 3- and 24-month-old rats, cardiogen stimulated cell proliferation and lowered p53 expression [1]
  • Cytoskeleton and nuclear matrix: In cultured mouse embryonic fibroblasts, H-Ala-Glu-Asp-Arg-OH raised actin, tubulin and vimentin 2- to 5-fold and lamin A and C 2- to 3-fold [2]
  • Tumor vasculature model: In senescent rats with transplanted M-1 sarcoma, cardiogen increased tumor cell apoptosis and slowed tumor growth through hemorrhagic necrosis, without a direct cytostatic effect [3]
  • Prostate fibroblasts: In aging cultures of human prostate fibroblasts, cardiogen and two other short peptides raised CXCL12, WEDC1 and ghrelin expression [4]
  • Cardiovascular senescence (review): A review of the senescence-associated secretory phenotype in cardiovascular cells discusses AEDR among peptides that regulate inflammaging-related molecules [5]
